Andreja Pejić has walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier, and modeled for Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott, and Thom Browne, but the 23 year old transgender model has scored her highest profile moment yet this month, appearing in a profile in Vogue.
“There are just more categories now,” the Bosnian-born, Australia-based Pejic tells Vogue of her experience transition in the fashion world, where she had long been categorized as an androgynous, gender-fluid model. “It’s good. We’re finally figuring out that gender and sexuality are more complicated.”
“Society doesn’t tell you that you can be trans,” she says. “I thought about being gay, but it didn’t fit. . . . I thought, Well, maybe this…is just something you like to imagine sometimes. Try to be a boy and try to be normal.”
