On Sunday night America gathered around the television to take part in a storied tradition: complaining about how Saturday Night Live isn’t funny anymore. Throwing a wrench in those plans, however, was the fact that the #SNL40 anniversary special actually managed to be both hilarious, moving, and inspired at times. The lengthy list of attendees and performers included cast members past and present, and an all-star lineup of friends of the show, including, in alphabetical order:
Fred Armisen, Dan Aykroyd, Alec Baldwin, Jim Carrey, Dana Carvey, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Robert De Niro, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, James Franco, Zach Galifianakis, Bill Hader, Jon Hamm, Tom Hanks, Derek Jeter, Norm Macdonald, Peyton Manning, Steve Martin, Melissa McCarthy, Paul McCartney, Seth Meyers, Garrett Morris, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Laraine Newman, Jack Nicholson, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Molly Shannon, Martin Short, Paul Simon, David Spade, Emma Stone, Jason Sudeikis, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Christopher Walken, Kerry Washington, Kanye West, Betty White, and Kristen Wiig.
Performances from Miley Cyrus, Kanye with Sia, Paul Simon, and Paul McCartney, among others, were enjoyable enough, but, as is often the case, it was the after party where most of the fun seemed to go down. Check out a few Vines from the party, which included McCartney joining Taylor Swift on stage to trade off on each other’s songs, which is either delightful, or a sign of the impending apocalypse, depending on how old you are.
Prince, because of course he did, also blew everyone’s minds.
Hard to top Bill Murray on tambourine though.
