In a stroke of why-didn’t-I-think-of-that pop art ingenuity, French photographer Sacha Goldberger corralled some of our most recognizable pop culture icons and sent them back to the 16th century in his series, “Super Flemish.” Goldberger, in a vision that had likes and shares and retweets written all over it, reimagines what superheroes like Batman, Spider-man, Wolverine, Superman, and the Hulk might look like as chilled out aristocrats. The answer? Wimps.
The full set, which also includes Star Wars characters and comic book villains like the Joker and Catwoman, can be seen on Goldberger’s official site, where he also explains the project a little: “The superheroes often live their lives cloaked in anonymity. These portraits give them a chance to « fix » their narcissism denied. By the temporal disturbance they produce, these images allow us to discover, under the patina of time, an unexpected melancholy of those who are to be invincible.”
