Every single new leak that surfaces from Jessie Ware’s upcoming debut full-length cements the fact that when Devotion drops later this month, it’ll show everyone why it’s been one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Today the singer dropped “Sweet Talk,” a track we’d only previously spied in this Devotion album teaser, and the whole song definitely doesn’t disappoint. “Sweet Talk” is easily the least modern track that we’ve heard from Ware so far– its keyboard, synth and drum machine are tender gales storming all over the place, even before the guitar kicks– making it one of the most satisfying. It belongs in that rare class of songs that are both alluring and sad; everything about the instrumentation and Ware’s silky vocals says lowered eyes and dark rooms, but there’s something undeniably doleful about it as well (it works with the same kind of forlorn desire that permeates Sade’s “Is it a Crime?”). For someone who’s still learning how to write songs, Ware’s certainly an impressive student.
