Liberals rule Hollywood, as everyone knows, lurking behind the scenes to sink their pro-environment, pro-tax, pro-Glee fangs into everything good and American. This may sound like a conspiracy to you. But lo and behold, the other side will say, how do you explain HBO’s upcoming untitled Roger Ailes project, fittingly called the Untitled Roger Ailes Project? It’s based on a script by Gabriel Sherman, the New York magazine writer who’s written two profiles on the Fox News CEO to resounding attention—you know, the ones so acrimoniously received that Sherman’s subscription to the Ailes-owned Putnam County News & Recorder was actually cancelled.
There are plenty of other lefty paws all over this thing: it’s being produced by two hosts over at MSNBC, and the deal was negotiated by former White House chief of staff’Rahm Emanuel’s brother. As a source told Deadline, “HBO prefers to take on Fox News through Ailes. The idea is that it should make Fox News look like a Mafia, and you get into this through Ailes, sidestepping Murdoch, not approaching the story head on.” HBO’s recent foray into partisan politics, Game Change, was certainly juicy enough to watch. Maybe Ed Harris can keep the old man makeup and add some weight to play Ailes?
