The fashion industry isn’t known for its diversity. In fact, last season, the CFDA had to send a reminder to designers to cast a diverse mix of models for fashon week. Still, brands like Balenciaga sent all-white models down the runway, and Versace continued to deliver problematic campaigns using people of color, unsuccessfully, as proof of their tolerance. Today, however, Gucci took a step in the right direction. This morning, the Italian brand previewed their upcoming campaign with 9 casting videos featuring an all black cast.
Each video shows the models answering a variety of questions about their spirit animals, before dancing to ’60s funk. Cast by the Midland Agency, who prides themselves on casting “real people” for brands like Hood by Air and Eckhaus Latta, the videos hint at Gucci’s upcoming Pre-Fall campaign, which launches this month. Whatever the final result, we can only hope the rest of the industry begins to take notice.
