“My work is very sensitive,” says 18-year-old Norwegian designer August Vestbo, whose brand Bror August is slated to make its runway debut this spring at New York Fashion Week. He’s a lover of traditional craftsmanship, admittedly spending hours indulging in time-consuming techniques that certainly slowed down the process, but ultimately created an intimate, personable product. Fabrics are hand-painted, zippers are hand-sewn and sequins are delicately attached to sheer tops.

For Bror August’s debut collection, Vestbo recruited artist Maria Storm Gran to collaboratively explore the possibilities of maximizing movement on a still, inanimate garment. The color orange acts as a reoccurring motif throughout this romantic body of work, taking organic, effortless form as wide-legged trousers, boxy tops with elongated sleeves and embellishments that recall fairytale fish scales.

To strengthen these ideas surrounding movement, the duo created a filmic component to the collection called, “FILM ORANGE,” complete with choreography by Solveig Ylva Dagsdottir. “The film is the final layer of movement,” Vestbo said. “The choreography plays with feelings of movement—how it can feel free and how it can feel controlled—exactly as it can feel in life or in the [film’s] case, at a surreal dancing party.”
