“One’s from Harlem and the other from Brooklyn, it’s a completely different genre,” DJ Funkmaster Flex was telling us who he thought was a better rapper, Jay Z or Cam’ron, at a G-Shock event on Wednesday.
“But I’ve know Cam the longest so if I had to choose I would say him.”
Hot 97’s primetime host–the most influential DJ ever–was spinning the event hosted by downtown scenester Vashtie. Flex said the best up and comers were Monolo Rose and Bobby Shmurda. Even after the latter’s arrest?
“I actually hadn’t heard about it until you just mentioned it,” Flex said, looking disappointed.
Bobby’s entire GS9 crew were indicted yesterday on murder and conspiracy charges, including 24 shootings (one murder), and were caught with scores of guns and a cornucopia of drugs.
We asked Flex about the NYPD choking death of Eric Garner and how there was no incitement for the officer case, and the subsequent protests. This and the Ferguson unrest have made hip hop radio a potent political outlet this year: “Wasn’t there something in the news this week about how one of the witnesses lied in her testimony? We’ll see how this is dealt with,” Flex told us before hitting the decks.
