I must be getting slow, because I wasn’t aware that a new Hayao Miyzaki movie was released earlier this year. Fortunately, he has an upcoming project to anticipate. From Up On Poppy Hill has already received a release in Japan, but you can check out the trailer in advance of its North American release. Though it’s just a trailer, it seems to be a more solemn, understated work than the fantastical adventures he’s become famous for creating. Set in ’60s Japan, it’s based around a fledgling teenage romance while exploring the greater context of a post-World War II country beginning to carve out its future. Miyzaki is only the screenwriter on this one and not the director, but I’m not sure it makes much of a difference; Studio Ghibli’s house style is so well-trained by now that I’m sure he could hand them a bunch of scribbled napkin notes and everything would turn out alright. It’s not out until March 2013, but who doesn’t love a good wait?
