French fashion maven, Sonia Rykiel, passed away this morning after a 15-year-long struggle with Parkinson’s. At age 86, the free-spirited designer was a symbol of effortless European fashion, oozing class and style.
Known as the “Queen of Knitwear,” Rykiel crafted meticulous knits and colorful womenswear that embodied Parisian style and celebrated female sexuality. Of her brand, Rykiel once said, “My shows are about the complete woman who swallows it all—it’s a question of survival.”
Though she retired in 2009, her eponymous label, run by Julie de Libran since 2014, continues to deliver classic designs filled with Rykiel’s strong yet fragile spirit. RIP—fashion will certainly miss one of its most prolific creative voices.
