Vestigial corporate appendage McDonald’s France has a new series of commercials out for their “American” bread-style hamburgers, including a bagel, cornbread, and “shiny” burger, which are definitely three things we’re known for eating here. I like my shiny a little crispy personally. The ads, (as Eater, and Slate have pointed out) attempt to poke fun at American stereotypes, but miss the mark somewhat. Mostly because the French are a humorless people.
I kid the French. It is interesting, however, to see how “American” is reduced to loaded signifiers here: the bully athlete (who plays hockey in a library), the Baywatch-style sex boobs babe girl boobs, and the police who are coming to confiscate your property. To be honest, that’s a pretty good summary of Americana as you’ll find isn’t it? The only more American thing I can think of is stereotyping foreign cultures for cheap laughs in an attempt to sell people poison that they don’t need, and then making that such a successful strategy that countries everywhere around the world adopt it as a business model. Also fucking a gun in a bikini.
