Frances Bean Cobain to Lana Del Rey: Being Dead Isn’t Cool

+

In an interview with the Guardian last week, Lana Del Rey expressed her longing for death. “I wish I was dead already,” she said, sharing her admiration for the likes of Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain with writer Tim Jonze. It turned into a whole thing! Del Rey responded to the piece saying she felt misled and taken advantage of in a series of tweets that were later deleted after writer Jonze posted audio of the interview. Another whole thing.

Here’s a third whole thing that’s now a thing. Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of a famous dead fella, said that being dead? Not as cool as you’d think.

ur too talented to waste it away,” she went on. “I’m not attacking anyone. I have no animosity towards Lana, I was just trying to put things in perspective from personal experience.”

She makes a good point. The death impulse is something that we all deal with from time to time, but should not be glamorized by people in the public eye. Cobain later, presumably, posed for her roughly one thousandth picture of herself smoking a cigarette.
