There’s a moment of revelation that comes while listening to Flying Lotus’s newly released remix of Frank Ocean’s de facto ballad of the year, “Thinkin Bout You”: Wait a minute, isn’t this just the same song but with a chipmunked voice and a slightly faster beat? Well, yes. And while we’d never assume that FlyLo was remixing under bad faith, the title he gave the version—”binge eating without you”—suggest an eye that’s at the very least winking, if not outright bulging with trollish goofery. At the very least, it’s incomplete; on his Facebook, FlyLo posted a link to the remix along with, “since i know ill never finish it..ill just post this ruff draft..” But whatever side of the comment section you fall on—”melts my heart” vs. “FlyLo is trolling all of you morons”—the remix is still oddly affecting, mostly because it would take a lot of scrubbing to sand off the emotive, entrancing quirks of Ocean’s voice, and because the pitch-shifting makes this seem like something The Man From Another Place would put on a mix CD. Good work, FlyLo, regardless of your intentions. Even something this tossed off still works.
