How ‘The Fifth Sense’ Empowers Female Artists Through Fragrance

+

Even in 2016, as female artists continue dominating their respective fields, women are more often than not, written out of history. But now, i-D, in collaboration with CHANEL, is paving a new future by rightfully giving female creatives their own platform, called The Fifth Sense—a Coco Chanel inspired initiative that centers on top talent.

A celebration of femme empowerment, The Fifth Sense will feature daily multimedia content spotlighting women across the arts as they explore the power of fragrance in the creative process. The site will also regularly highlight original work from some of today’s leading ladies. As part of their Hero series, The Fifth Sense will commission six different multi-disciplinary works from women around the globe, beginning with London stage designer, Es Devlin.

Having developed sets for some of the world’s biggest productions, from Beyoncé spectacles to the Olympics, The Fifth Sense asked Devlin to create her first solo artistic installation. Featuring its own original fragrance, “Mirror Maze” offers a fresh analysis of the relationship between scent and memory, embodying The Fifth Sense ethos by using fragrance as a means of self-expression.
