Pure Human by Tina Gorjanc takes wearing your favorite designer to the next level, using skin grown from Alexander McQueen’s DNA to create a new range of “human leather” goods, including jackets and bags.
Designed as a “critical design project that aims to address shortcomings concerning the protection of biological information and move the debate forward using current legal structure,” the line will explore “the ability of the technology to shift the perception of the production system for luxury goods as we know it and project its implementation in our current commercial system.” Gorjanc plans to produce the line with McQueen’s genetic material, and include strands of the designer’s hair for the inside labels, used to represent “a reliable source of authenticated genetic information.”
Though the project hasn’t yet been approved, Gorjanc has crafted prototypes using pig skin and applied for a patent. The designer hopes to redefine ideas of luxury and use skin-related bio-technologies to develop “products that reach far beyond beauty and physical enchantments, provoking and challenging the relationship between human and skin.”
