The original treatment for “Holding On to Nothing”, the video from Brooklyn-based artist Owen Beverly, was meant to accompany a song of his that referenced the Mermaid Parade and Coney Island in the lyrics, Beverly says.
“When the director Ryan Sheehy and I switched gears to ‘Holding On To Nothing,’ a song about a high school tragedy, the idea came up of keeping the old treatment and having two different narratives going at the same time. The mermaid story in the video and the story in the song connect at times and then drift apart, they share a central theme and then fan out. It was a fun project, it felt like we were adding music to a video or a short film and not the other way around.”
That aiding of coming together then drifting apart runs through the video, which follows a pair of star-crossed, or ocean-crossed to be more precise, lovers over the course of a day at Coney Island.
