These days, it seems like every act with a guitar and a glowering stare are emerging from the depths of New York’s DIY venues and falling straight into the hands of Todd Pendu. Since the beginnings of his label Pendu Sound in 2006, Pendu has had his finger on the pulse of bands so new they don’t even have a pulse yet. His roster ranges from the languid croonings of Brooklyn-via-LA duo STARRED to the bare melodies of electronic outfit aTelecine (as bare as frontwoman Sasha Grey’s former profession.) Each Pendu Sound act brags a complete package of equal parts talent and image: Chelsea Wolfe’s haunting ballads and equally haunting persona; Von Haze’s witch house musical stylings and witchy style to match (witch house is still a genre, right?) Each band is a visual embodiment of their music, a total aesthetic.
For their latest venture, Pendu Sound will begin a digital single series, and we’re premiering the first one exclusively on BULLETT. Each month a hand-selected band will release a new single as well as an original video to accompany it. For the first release of the series, Pendu tapped electro/post-punk duo Tempers. Comprised of Jasmine Golestaneh and Eddie Cooper, the NYC-based band comes from a global background. Golestaneh’s Latvian-Iranian descent combined with Cooper’s NYC roots and Berlin influences result in the melding of cities and erasure of oceans. What remains are ambient city noises and gritty yet ethereal intonations. For their single, “Eyes Wide Wider,” Tempers went to the Catskills to film a music video that’s half fashion film half ’80s porno sans the sex. And now, here’s your first look at and free download of “Eyes Wide Wider.”
