Belle and Sebastian leader Stuart Murdoch has been working on his musical film project, God Help the Girl, since 2003, and now Murdoch’s decade-long dream is starting to look like it’s on its way to theaters.Variety reported today that Elle Fanning and Olly Alexander are in talks to star in Murdoch’s auteurist debut. 14-year-old Fanning is set to play American teen Cass in the Glasgow-set flick, while 21- year-old Alexander plays cynical guitarist James, who becomes a mentor to Fanning’s character. God Help the Girl‘s lead role of Eve remains uncast; the part was sung by Catherine Ireton in the material’s 2009 release as a concept album.
Alexander has been keeping busy too, with parts in Enter the Void, Gulliver’s Travels, Jane Campion’s Bright Star, Tribeca 2012’s Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, and opposite Greta Gerwig in The Dish & the Spoon, and If you’re chuckling because you would’ve answered “Elle Fanning” if someone had asked what you “What 14-year-old actress would be most likely to play a lead role in a musical written by the frontman for Belle & Sebastian,” well, duh. This is probably just a smart move for Fanning, whose profile has only been going up since the release of Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere less than a year and a half ago. Her and Chloë Moretz should probably just find an alley and knife-fight for tween-starlet-of-the-moment; I’m pretty sure that’s a Highlander-type deal where the winner gets all of the loser’s powers, plus a contract to star in whatever extremely popular young adult series makes it to the screen next.
