Today People named Dwayne Johnson the “Sexiest Man Alive,” but is he the sexiest man alive? (btw he’s no longer officially known as “The Rock,” but he will always be The Rock in our hearts)
Before I delve into an unnecessary analysis of Johnson’s sexiness, let’s acknowledge that this is a big deal from an equality perspective. Hollywood is, of course, notorious for whitewashing and Johnson is only the second non-caucasian man to be dubbed sexiest man by People, the first being Denzel Washington (FYI Johnson’s dad is African-Canadian and his mom is Samoan. He grow up in Hawaii!).
Naming Johnson the sexiest man is way more interesting than going with a Ryan Gosling or a Ryan Reynolds or any other actor named Ryan. So kudos to you, People (though I’m sure you’ve already patted yourself on the back plenty for this, not to mention the fact that given his following and the fact that he’s the highest paid actor in Hollywood, they really couldn’t go wrong here).
That being said, has anyone ever thought of The Rock as sexy? I dunno, guys. Objectively speaking, he’s obviously an attractive dude with a rockin’ (lol) bod (though personally I prefer a gangly, skinny, malnourished physique), but is he sexy? I mean, he’s funny and charming – that’s sexy – but I’ve never even thought to objectify Dwayne Johnson. Can someone who watches Ballers weigh in on this? Can a man who once rocked (lol) a turtleneck and a fanny pack ever be considered sexy? Who is People to decide what’s sexy anyway and doesn’t naming the sexiest man somehow feel antiquated?
I dunno, guys. I just don’t know.
