As you may have guessed, the only way to make a buck in the music biz is to tour (or whore yourself or your music out to brands). This is because we all get our music online for free and blah blah blah.
But before you go feeling sorry for your favorite artists, take a look at this tour breakdown on Billboard. It reveals that the big names can pull in anywhere from $3.3 million to $30 million for 40 dates.
But that’s not the line item that caught our eye (being a big time recording artist seems like it requires a lot of work and talent and or general attractiveness). A drug holder/blunt roller can earn $500 a week on tour, plus travel and accommodations. Say what?! Dream job.
But before you go emailing Miley or Rihanna’s people to apply, you may want to consider the risks involved. While weed is wonderful, it is also illegal in many places. Bigger acts tour to places like Russia and Mexico where the prison conditions aren’t exactly desirable. Do the drug handlers also have to acquire the drugs or is that on the local venue promoter? Make sure you read the fine print.
Meanwhile, these are only industry averages. If you manage to become Waka Flocka Flame’s blunt roller, you can make a hell of a lot more; he offers a $50,000 annual salary to roll his spliffs.
According to Waka, a good blunt roller needs to maintain a good weed-to-tobacco ratio, be speedy and consistent and always be rolling/prepared. There are also personality qualifications, which probably vary by artist. Waka’s blunt roller has gotta be “as serious as Steven Seagal, funny as Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart.”
