Stillness is no longer the move for Dirty Projectors. It’s been a few years since they topped critics’ lists and party playlists with 2009’s Bitte Orca, a time which saw a couple of EPs and a number of the band’s members stepping out for their own side projects. So what better way is there to get back into the swing of things than by releasing a bulk of news all at once? Just before the weekend, the band dropped “Gun With No Trigger,” which sounds like the Dirty Projectors, alright: Dave Longstreth’s piercing warble on display, harmonizing in the background, a clattering drumbeat that’s halfway between spastic and rhythmic (though aren’t the two always close?). The accompanying video even plays it up as a karaoke song rendered in a sort of alien cuneiform, in case you were worried they forgot how to be weird since becoming a pop group.
But a standout song does not come apropos of nothing: Today, the band announced that their new album, Swing Lo Magellan, will come out on July 10, via Domino. What’s more, the last album’s breakout vocalist, Angel Deradoorian, is “on hiatus” from the band, according to a press release. Song titles like “Just Like Chevron” and “Offspring Are Blank” are enticing enough, though it’s probably safe to say that “Dance for You” is not a cover of the Beyonce song (infinite bummer). But if it is? Game point, Dirty Projectors. How could you be less than completely excited?
