Did Nicki Minaj Really Endorse Mitt Romney, or is She Just Trolling?

+

There’s a track on Lil Wayne’s new mixtape, Dedication 4, in which he raps over the beat from “Get Smoked,” which originally featured a 13-year old bragging about the street life. Amazingly, that isn’t the most trollish moment of the whole collection. No, that comes on a freestyle over Kanye West’s “Mercy,” in which Wayne invites Nicki Minaj to rap the most confusing maybe-political endorsement of the year:

I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney
You lazy bitches are fucking up the economy

Is Minaj just kidding? Her delivery is pretty serious, but on the other hand, endorsing Mitt Romney? Shades of Eazy-E getting invited to the Bush Senior White House, sure, which means she could just be yanking the chain of a trillion political bloggers as she’d previously called for stronger universal health care. (A Democrat position if there ever was one.) Gawker’s Louis Peitzman suggests that she’s quoting a hypothetical Republican rather than coming out as one, which is more reasonable. I mean, I don’t listen to Nicki Minaj for Economist-level political analysis, but it would be cool if she could support her position with stronger evidence than “y’all lazy.” Listen for yourself below.
