Earlier this month, a BULLETT correspondent traveled to gorgeous, dilapidated Havana, Cuba. Of course, as an American citizen, a ridiculous and outdated combination of severed diplomatic ties, a powerful Cuban exile lobby and an economic embargo — in place since John F. Kennedy was president — meant that this was illegal. A crime punishable by massive fines and a possible jail stint. Today, following the release of American Alan Gross after five years in Cuban prison, the governments in Washington and Havana have announced a sweeping overhaul of policy that could bring about the long awaited normalization of ties between the two countries. Our correspondent was one of the last Americans to be in Cuba during the embargo era.
