It’s no secret that the split between Alice Glass and Ethan Kath has been an acrimonious one, with the two founding members of Crystal Castles trading veiled, and not so veiled, accusations back and forth at one another since they split two years ago.
That latest installment of the feud has resulted in the group, which now consists of Kath and new singer Edith Frances, being dropped from a showcase at SXSW after Glass pointed out how inappropriate it was.
Tumblr’s 79 Cents party at SXSW was meant to highlight the issue of women being paid less than men, and will feature the likes of Jhené Aiko, Empress Of, Little Simz and Tacocat. But after the lineup was reported on, Glass protested the band’s inclusion, telling The Verge “As someone who knew Ethan Kath on a personal and professional level, it is my opinion that he is not an appropriate artist to be performing at a feminism-centric event.”
Tumblr subsequently dropped the band from the lineup, writing in a statement, “We’ve removed Crystal Castles from the lineup of the 79 Cents party. We don’t know the facts around comments made about a member of the band, and we’re not going to engage in an investigation around it. We’re hosting this event to highlight gender disparity issues, something that Tumblr and our community cares deeply about, and we don’t want the band’s presence to distract from this important mission.”
