After spending years ensnared in record label red tape, The Cool Kids’ debut LP, When Fish Ride Bicycles, has finally dropped. The record’s got a pinch of extra punch, a definite assertiveness that didn’t quite actualize in the easy lean of 2008’s EP The Bake Sale. Obviously, these boys place a good deal of emphasis on the possibilities inherent in evolution, and it extends beyond their absurdist album title—for Chuck and Mikey, it’s the tenant of being. They’ve eschewed pigeonholes of the past, shrugging off the “retro-hipster” label they never even wanted, and are on to the next without so much as a glance backward. BULLETT sits down to chat new beats.
