‘Community’ Meta Joke “Inspector Spacetime” Debuts IRL, Is Bad

+

If you caught a whiff of a little more nerd jizz in the air this week than usual, that’s probably because of the debut of the new web series Untitled Web Series about a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time. If that doesn’t ring any bells, congratulations, you don’t spend all day on the internet. It’s the culmination of a series of meta-jokes that began on the meta-joke, meta-sitcom Community. Meta. In the show, the two fan-service protagonists Abed and Troy are big fans of the low-budget Doctor Who knock off, Inspector Spacetime. And because no one can ever just appreciate a little joke and move on with their lives any more, that show within the show has now become a show outside of the show inside the show of our own lives’ show. Ouroboros of boring. Ouroboring I should have said there, shit.

Produced by Travis Richey, who played the character on Community, the first episode starts off great with it’s “You’re watching British Television. Well done” tag, then descends from there into a hokey parody of a parody that didn’t need to exist but now does, so good job to the internet for bringing this to life. On his next adventure, the Inspector should travel back to before he wrote this script.
