Christopher Kane Makes the Case for Countryside Babushka

“Our mum used to embarrass us when she picked us up from school wearing one of those plastic rain hats,” said Christopher Kane’s sister during his fall ’16 presentation in February. The collection reminisced on growing up outside Glasgow in the ’90s, and with these memories came the realization of updated plastic rain hats by millinery Stephen Jones—looks that made strong cases this season for Countryside Babushka.

Why wait 50 years to flaunt your advanced style when you can do so today?

Shot by photographer Alasdair McLellan, Kane’s new campaign plays with this ageless empowerment, featuring musician and model Jamie Bochert, who’s also modeled for Marc Jacobs and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Kane’s series pulls inspiration from Cecil Beaton’s black-and-white portraiture with an eye for classic BBC documentaries. This is all the designer’s visualization of a stylized recluse, arguing in favor of “dead and thrown-away” beauty, rather than “alive.” See the stunning series in full, above.
