“When the world is in crisis, the Diver must act,” writes Chicago-based artist Owen Bones of the attitude behind his newest “10-track odyssey,” Dive Club. This full-length LP follows Bones’ Sabotage EP and introduces a more mature, honed vision of the sound he’s been developing for years, actively performing throughout Chicago’s underground circuit.
Dive Club, a concept album, comes equipped with an online Field Operations Manuel, and features an impressive lineup of guest vocalists, including Tunji Ige, Lil Aaron, Mothica, Saba and The Cool Kids. Armed with sludgy rock drums, grizzly synthesizers and optimistic melodies, Bones’ LP is an exploration of the organic dancing with electronic—a fusion that sounds like it could soundtrack an expeditionary video game.
Opener, “Pilot,” is a frenetic display of Bones’ production prowess, while tracks “Garden City” and “Not From Here” have a remarkable childlike innocence. “Rebreather” is packed with incessant urgency, while Dive Club’s soft closer, “Son,” sounds like the perfect resolution to this deep sea adventure.
