When news broke that Michael Fassbender would be portraying Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic by Danny Boyle, my first reaction was, “Gee, that’s odd.” Factor in that the script is written by Aaron Sorkin, and the whole thing kind of sounds like a fictional film that would exist on 30 Rock or Entourage (“We wanted Danny Boyle to direct but he’s busy wrapping that Steve Jobs biopic starring Michael Fassbender, you know, the one Sorkin agreed to write because he lost that poker game?”).
Well, this recreation of an old Apple ad for its NeXT line of computers starring Fassbender has just surfaced online, and it has done little to instill confidence in this casting decision. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Fassbender, but they’re going to have to do more than put him in a suit (or turtleneck) to make him believable as Jobs.
No sense in beating around the bush; I’m just going to come right out and say I think Fassbender is too generically handsome for this role. While physical characteristics aren’t everything when casting a biopic of someone iconic (Ashton Kutcher looks a lot like Jobs and that film was a nightmare) they certainly ought to play a factor. Sorry Fassbender, I’m just not buying what you’re selling here.
