Charli XCX’s Relationship-Praising ‘What I Like’ Welcomes ‘the Husband & Wife $#%&’

One of the more appealing things about continually up-and-coming pop singer Charli XCX is how she’s able to infuse otherwise commonplace romantic sentiments with head-snapping attitude. That happens in her newest song, “What I Like,” off her upcoming True Romance album, when she declares “We on some husband and wife shit / I don’t really care cause I know that I like it.” There’s the acknowledgement of maybe getting a little corny, followed by a shoulder shrug—”this is how I feel, and you can piss off.” Peppered with mile-a-minute drum machines and introduced by a Doppler whistle that crashes into a languid rhythm, “What I Like” has XCX foreseeing a future for her and her boyfriend, and embracing it rather than reflexively retreating to millennial wanderlust. Husband and wife shit never seemed so cool, did it? True Romance is out on April 16. The song originally premiered over at the Fader, but you can listen to it below.
