We’re big fans of both Charli XCX and Brooke Candy, which makes a collaboration between the two pop stars on “Cloud Aura,” off XCX’s recent Super Atlas mixtape, such a nifty little endeavor. Big, blocky synths, Candy’s self-possessed flow, XCX’s increasingly identifiable quiver: It’s a very Now song, making it a perfect choice for a very Now music video in which the two pace some anonymously black and white path looking their coolest, while pop culture footage from a number of sources—The Terminator, Casablanca and The X-Factor, among others—is sliced in between. It’s an easy sell if you’re into glitchy pop culture mash-ups or either star, but the personal selling point comes about halfway through when there’s a brief interstitial of a heartbreaking scene from the first Pokemon movie where two Pikachus slap each other because they’re in the fight of their lives. Stuff to make you cry, man.
