Everyone knows that old saying, “Behind every great man there is a great woman.” It’s been quoted in books, on greeting cards and reformatted countless times into self-help books and products targeted at divorcees. After my parents got divorced, my mom got a giant leopard print pillow that said, “Behind every great woman is herself!” in bright pink cursive handwriting.
Facebook executive and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg has flipped it again, this time as, “Behind every successful woman is another successful woman.” In a new video featuring celebrities like Lena Dunham, Selena Gomez, Eva Longoria, Emma Watson, Serena Williams, Kerry Washington and Megyn Kelly, Sandberg and co. are asking women to #LeanInTogether.
#LeanIn started when Sandberg released her book focused on the power of women in the workplace and gender equality. Celebrity powerhouses like Dunham, and even feminist allies like Orange is the New Black actor Matt McGorry, started spreading the hashtag to promote necessary changes in women’s work environments.
#LeanInTogether is the latest addition to the movement, which argues for the benefits in women supporting one another. Historically, women have been pitted against each other, forced to compete with one another as opposed to working together. #LeanInTogether calls for the end of that competition, with women teaming up to fight for change. The video, released yesterday on Makers, shows female celebrities naming the women who’ve supported them and asserting the power ladies have when they #LeanInTogether.
They say, “Together, we can get to equality. Together, we can raise our voices. Together we can stand up to anything and anyone. Together we can make the workplace a better place […] When women #LeanInTogether, we accomplish amazing things.”
