California Passes Revenge Porn Law, Nude Selfies Still Not Protected

+

California has just passed a law making it a misdemeanor to distribute explicit photos of someone online without their permission, punishable by a $1,000 fine or up to 6 months in prison. This is a good thing. But, the person posting the photos must have done so with the intent to cause distress or harm which is a medium thing. The law does not apply, however, to #selfies, one of the most prevalent forms of such nude pictures shared online. While it may seem overall, like this is a step in the right direction, what it actually does is further codify slutshaming into the law. If these bitches didn’t want the world to see them naked, in other words, they shouldn’t have taken the frightening, emotional step into sharing intimate photos of themselves with a person who they are supposed to trust most in the world.

NBC News reports:

Holly Jacobs, a Florida woman who founded End Revenge Porn after her own nightmare with the issue began more than four years ago, said the law is an “encouraging first step,” but doesn’t do enough to protect victims whose “selfies,” photos of themselves, were shared with exes.

Almost four out of five photos that are posted online of victims by vengeful exes are photos that the victims had shared with their exes, and were meant only for their eyes, Jacobs said in a statement. The California law “only addresses images taken or recorded by other individuals, which means that it fails to cover ‘self-shots,’ ” she said.

A few related lessons for men, and yes, it is mostly men who are posting revenge porn:

1) Sometimes people break up with you.

2) Sometimes they even cheat on you.

3) This does not make them evil.

4) It makes them human, flawed.

5) Going out of your way to humiliate someone in front of the world, even someone who you perceive as having wronged you, is juvenile, and a far greater offense than the one you think you’re trying to correct.

6) Probably still a good idea not to send photos of your naked body to someone who you barely know.

7) At least crop your head out.

8) Be nice to one another out there you kids.

9) For god’s sake, just be fucking nice to one another.

10) This sort of thing isn’t helping either.
