With its absurdly wonderful private collections, a contemporary museum that shows the buzziest artists on the planet, a growing art fair that attracts top notch galleries (we’ll be there this year) and massive, massive amounts of wealth (the driving force behind all those things), Dallas is quickly becoming a globally recognized art destination. MTV RE:DEFINE, an annual auction whose proceeds benefit the MTV Staying Alive Foundation (which fights HIV globally) and the aforementioned Dallas Contemporary Museum is just one more reason art lovers are flocking to Dallas.
Unless you’re a broke dirtbag like me, break out your chequebooks because this year’s auction, which goes live on Paddle8 Friday, features works by David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Tom Sachs and Michael Craig-Martin, who will be honored at the initiative’s culminating event April 10th. Geogia Arnold (the executive director and founder of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation) describes works available as “a mix of sought-after emerging talent and contemporary masters, all sharing a commitment of boundary-pushing work.”
Hosted by the Goss-Michael Foundation, the event features music curated by beloved New York fellows Dan Colen and Nate Lowman (which includes a performance by I.U.D. – the killer band that performed atop two semi trucks at the opening of Colen’s Brant Foundation opening last year), dinner and booze (because nothing empties pockets at charity auctions quite like alcohol).
So buy art and feel good about it – it’s a tax write-off anyway.
