“I hate my body; don’t wanna live in this body,” opens New York-based outfit Bottoms’ thrashing single, “My Body.” The music video fittingly stars nightlife beauty Macy Rodman, who recently came out on Facebook as transgender—an announcement that powerfully resonates with the track’s core message. A self-declared “gender-problematizing goth dance band,” Bottoms was fostered in Brooklyn’s DIY space Secret Project Robot, where band members Simon Leahy and Michael Prommasit teamed up with queer performance artist Jake Dibeler to create provocative, punk electronic.
The “My Body” video features Rodman as a suburban housewife, making orange juice and eventually cutting off her breasts. This bloody scene was pulled from a pornographic-horror anthology aptly titled, HORRORPORN, which Dibeler originally created for the first ever New York City Porn Film Festival. “I wanted the music video to read like this suburban housewife who’s starting to lose her grip on reality and fantasizes this self-mutilation as pleasure,” Dibeler said. “I was influenced by films like Repulsion, The Shining and Perfect Blue—movies about a descent into madness, blurring reality and fantasy.” Watch a bloody Rodman sip OJ, below, and hear more of Bottoms’ music, here.
