For Brooklyn-based outfit Hints, “sticky pop songs are the goal.” It’s an exercise inspired by their mutual visual arts backgrounds, piecing together disparate ideas until they look like slick, smart compositions, much like soaring pop music. This exploration was heard loudly on the single, “Benediction,” which married shimmering ’80s nostalgia with looming UK guitar-pop. Hints’ follow-up, “Pillow Case,” grazes a similar sonic landscape, this time given a sunnier glow with fluttering guitars and a beachy, irresistible melody.
Both “Benediction” and “Pillow Case” will be featured on the band’s forthcoming five-track EP, No Regrets in Old English, slated for release June 9. The energetic effort is the product of recording sessions with Ayad Al Adhamy (Team Spirit, Passion Pit) and was mixed by Andrew Maury (RAC, Ra Ra Riot, Panama Wedding).
