Bret Easton Ellis Really Wants to Adapt ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

+

Like the Twitter accounts of many celebrities, Bret Easton Ellis’ has revealed that the American Psycho author is a total eccentric (what other word is there for a 48-year-old man who identifies with Dolores Haze, Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina?), but he can still surprise from time to time. Case in point: this weekend Ellis tweeted several times about his very enthusiastic desire to adapt the New York Times bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey for the silver screen. Seeing as Fifty Shades of Grey started its life as a Twilight fanfic and commands the same type of erotic gravity over moms who never got the chance to indulge their fantasies of being dominated by a powerful and mysterious young man, this is pretty much the same as if Ellis had wanted to adapt Twilight (thought for all we know he did, and it doesn’t really seem unlikely). Unfortunately for those of us who are fans of unlikely pairings, Ellis only has a couple of screenwriting credits to his name, so it doesn’t seem like a studio’s likely to take that kind of risk with a property that’ll probably make a ton of money (especially if Ellis gets his way and Ryan Gosling is cast as the titular Grey, that’s hand over fist territory right there). However, maybe that way audiences would be spared a Christian Grey who spends whole scenes ruminating on the brilliance of Phil Collins.
