Don’t let the jokey name fool you, “Ew, You Taste Like Cigarettes” from Secret Stuff is dramatic business. The track, from the Nashville band’s split 7-inch with fellow emo punks Sundressed plays out like the dwindling out of a relationship. Slow at first, contemplative, meandering and unsure in its Kinsella-core guitar noodling, it builds to a frantic crescendo.
The track almost never saw the light of day.
“We recorded ‘Ew’ with Jon Hicks in December of 2015 over a period of 2 days,” the band’s Michael Pfohl says. “The song was one of the very first songs we wrote as a band but it was a lot faster and different and we eventually just stopped playing it. We decided to come back to it later and reworked it with some different dynamics in order to make it feel more full when performed by just a 3-piece.”
It was a good decision.
“It’s about the hesitancy to get involved with someone when you can already see problems that would get in the way of developing a relationship.”
Sundressed and Secret Stuff’s split is out on Spartan Records on July 29.
