There’s nothing like a good gangster movie when it’s done right, and if this trailer for Killing Them Softly (formerly titled Coogan’s Trade) accurately represents the movie it’s promoting, it looks like it’s done pretty well. Brad Pitt, essentially looking like a slightly less affable version of Brad Pitt (which is pretty much his specialty, but if it ain’t broke), plays a hitman on the tail of two small-time crooks who knock over an illegal poker game. Pretty basic, right? Well all of the reactions from the film’s showing at Cannes seem to indicate something deeper than a basic gangster movie, with The Guardian calling it “outstandingly watchable” and The Hollywood Reporter saying that it’s “terribly smart in every respect, with ne’er-a-false note performances and superb craft work from top to bottom.”
Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that the cast includes veteran gangsters Ray Liotta and James Gandolfini, as well as the pretty great Richard Jenkins. Maybe the worst thing about this trailer is that it debunks my longstanding theory that the way Pitt kills his victims is by dressing up as a furry who uses a big fox costume to smother his victims to death while yiffing their asphyxiated bodies. What, is it illegal to take a title literally now?
