Coexist, the xx‘s sophomore album, entered the world with a headwind of hype and was received in a manner befitting of the band’s quiet, reserved style. Which isn’t to say that people didn’t love the record, or that it didn’t garner a variety of effusive reviews, but the moment seemed to come and go without much lingering in the music conversational blogosphere. (At least from my Tumblr-addled perspective.)
But the record is still fairly fresh and producing plenty of new dividends, the most recent of which is a video for the standout “Chained,” one of the first songs from Coexist to see release. As you might expect from such a bleak, minimal band like the xx, the video is fairly bleak and minimal: The band strolls around a depressed harbor before each taking their dive into the muted waters. It’s gorgeously shot and the track is a killer, but a look at the top YouTube comments reveals where listener interests might lay: “OLIVER IS WET” upvoted 71 times, followed by “JAMIE YOU’RE GORGEOUS!” with 33 likes. Yep, they’re a blog band.
