A popular way for a seemingly average celebrity to appear kind of cool is to don a t-shirt of a critically respectable band in public, so that fans pause in their derision and exclaim, “Whoa, I didn’t know (mildly lame actor) was into (great band I liked in high school)!” On Tumblr, I saw a recent debate about the sight of Kristen Stewart in a Black Flag t-shirt and whether this was Totally Punk or Not Punk At All; whether K-Stew was casting off the shackles of her teen fandom by repping a band most notable for lauding the benefits of drinking beer and watching TV, or whether she was just being another uninformed tween trying to score cool points. (An endless debate, mind you.)
Hence the creation of this week’s best irreverent meme: Black Flag Shirts on Every Celebrity, which slaps the iconic BF logo across the chest of just about any famous person you can think of. There’s Hilary Duff! Sarah Jessica Parker! Vince Vaughn! Channing Tatum! All of these otherwise square celebrities recast as punk ambassadors, flashing a subversive edge long buried underneath the weight of average romantic comedies and grinning interviews with People. There is even the ultimate celebrity, Jesus Christ himself, looking like the ultimate badass. Who says punk rock isn’t an equal opportunity medium?
