“These four lonely walls have changed the way I feel,” sings Beyoncé over a melancholic piano melody; it’s our first taste of original material since she released “7/11” in 2014, this time recruiting UK producer Naughty Boy and Arrow Benjamin to make the Beehive lose its shit. This particular offering, however, isn’t as sweet as Beyoncé’s full potential.
Upbeat ballads like this are always tricky to nail and “Runnin’ (Lose It All)” is simply a bit of a snoozer (it’s certainly no “Halo”). For someone as revered as Beyoncé, these mediocre fillers really shouldn’t be a common occurrence and yet they somehow keep infiltrating her discography—why, B? If anything, the music video, directed by Charlie Robbins, is the real star in this package. Watch, below, as two lovers dance together effortlessly beneath the ocean surface.
