Finally. Gossip’s Beth Ditto announced today she’ll be releasing a plus-size clothing this February, reminding the shamefully biased fashion industry that skinny folk aren’t the only ones with cool style. Previewing what’s to come this spring, Ditto’s unveiled a collaboration t-shirt with iconic designer Jean Paul Gaultier, now available on the singer’s official site.
The oversized shirt features a lithograph print of Gaultier’s signature cone bra corset, which was famously worn by Madonna during her ’90s Blonde Ambition Tour. “Jean Paul is the most generous, positive person,” Ditto said. “He truly loves women of all sizes and ages and knows how to make everyone feel gorgeous.”
Ditto’s idea to launch with a corset in the context of plus-size fashion is brilliantly unexpected, the corset being an age-old means to cinch a woman’s waist into an “ideal” feminine form. It’s a giant “fuck you,” while still celebrating the romance of fashion and raising money for Girls Rock Camp Foundation.
“Big girls are beautiful and Beth is super beautiful,” Gaultier said. “Long live the beauty with shapes, boobs and bottoms. This is a new concept, a loose fit corset. And Beth fits it perfectly.”
