There is something about Fashion Week--be it the frenzied schedule, the promise of commerce, or the notion of being the first person to tweet about some sort of top-secret, mystical collaboration–that breeds strange bedfellows. Fashion’s Night Out is perhaps the most absurd of all days of the city-wide event, with every label, store, designer and perhaps even Starbucks trying to entice the cool kids with promise of freebies and sounds and drinks. Think Glee kids doing Bowie, Anna Dello Russo coming down from the mountain to bless Macy’s patrons, or a Coach party hosted by the obvious choice of SNL’s Seth Meyers. (These all exist. They weren’t just the result of some New York City version of Mad Libs.) Adding to the wacky partnerships of the night is cheery garage rocker Best Coast pairing up with structural master Helmut Lang. Nothing says black and geometric like lo-fi rock-and-roll.
But Bethany Cosentino the gal behind Best Coast, is pretty psyched on the whole thing. We caught up with the Angeleno to ask how she deals with the high fashion crowd, and if this means a sudden departure from her sunny sounds (or perhaps a signal that Lang is doing ’90s punk revivalism?). Sadly, she said no, but gave us some insight into her Fashion Week:
BULLETT: Does your Helmut Lang performance mean Best Coast might be heading towards a darker, East Coast vibe?
Bethany: I don’t think so! I love the beach and the sun and all that, but I mostly wear black and dark colors. I’m not really a fan of color. Everyone thinks I would be because of the music I play, but I’m super into black clothes. I love Helmut Lang. I’m so excited to be playing this.
So, what’ll you wear for the fashion crowd?
Black! I just got this super wide-brimmed floppy black felt hat. Hopefully I’ll wear that too.
Are there any shows you might want to check out?
I don’t have a lot of time in the city so I won’t be able to check out many. I’m going to Pamela Love‘s show though, I’m a big fan. Wish I could see Marc Jacobs, Rachel Comey, and anything Opening Ceremony is doing.
Best Coast: They’re just like us.
