Beck’s known for experimenting with his music, but this new endeavor is an entirely different medium altogether. For the upcoming Playstation 3 game Sound Shapes, he’s contributed three new songs to be incorporated into the Adventuretime-meets-Super Mario gameplay. The song you can hear here is called “Cities,” which definitely builds on the funky, New Age aesthetic he’s been steadily heading toward for a few years. As you can sort of tell from watching the video, the game allows you to construct one of his songs piece-by-piece by collecting in-game tokens while his lyrics flash across the screen. Which is the technical part—in addition to the new music, it just looks like it’s a fun game to play, the type that doesn’t require you to bury your head in a cave for a few days with a controller. (As some of us have been known to do.) It’s out on August 7.
