I was waiting for what I assumed to be the inevitable product placement tie in to this short film, Lost Memories, before I realized that it’s French, (Parisian setting and French dialogue tipped me off), and they’re probably allowed to make things over there that aren’t funded by snack chip and energy drink brands. This might just be an actual meditation on the state of contemporary life? Kind of weird.
The short, directed by Francois Ferracci, takes place eight years in the future, during which time we’ve made some impressive leaps in technology and skyscraper building techniques, it seems. A handsome young couple is shown spending a lovely day in the city, taking pictures of themselves constantly (nothing too futuristic about that), with the dude proud of how many views he’s getting. But wait. The girl has a secret which she reveals at the last minute before something happens that changes the world forever. Then the guy just watched her walk away without saying something like “Hey, why are you walking away?” Anyway, don’t worry about the plot details that much, just focus on the idea, which is a novel one: life isn’t real anymore.
