OK, maybe brilliant is overstating it, because man, this is one over the top comic book of a story, but the London-set detective-on-the-brink series Luther has announced they’re returning for a third season, or series, as they call them over there in bizarro land, and it’s the best news I’ve heard all day.
If you’ve never seen it, bang out of work right now, head home, and fire up your Netflix machine. As the show describes itself, Luther is a “crime drama starring Idris Elba (The Wire) as Luther, a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can’t always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions.” It’s a lot more than that though, it’s the first role I’ve seen Elba in that was powerful enough to make me stop thinking of him as Stringer Bell. Now when I watch The Wire it seems weird that that’s John Luther right there pretending to be a Baltimore drug dealer. He won the Golden Globe for the role, by the way, not that that necessarily means anything, but just saying. See clips and what not here.
