Balenciaga’s SS ’17 Campaign is All About Spandex & Fetishism

+

For his Balenciaga Spring ’17 collection, Demna Gvasalia channeled fetishism through spandex, calling it an “exploration of the intimate relationship” between couture and the fetish world. Featuring skin-tight pants and boots in feminine pinks, the designer juxtaposed the power-heavy world of domination with submissive tropes of femininity. For his latest campaign, Gvasalia continued the connection, showcasing both the collection’s more feminine pieces, with a lot of dark latex.

Shot by Harley Weir, the SS ’17 images feature Gvasalia favorites, Alek Wek, Shujing Zhou, Sunniva Vaatevik, Amandine Renard, Litay Marcus, Lebanese actress Carla Daher and Eliza Douglas in Lynchian settings, with some of the collection’s most memorable pieces. Bol poses in a pink and purple bodysuit in front of red curtains à la Agent Cooper’s red room dream. Douglas, on the other hand, wears a black cape that conjures up even Gvasalia’s darkest fantasies. As the designer prepares to show his second Balenciaga men’s collection next week in Paris, Weir’s images reinforce Gvasalia’s skill in mixing hard and soft to create his own version of modern femininity.
