“I have my tomboy side from Texas and I have this sexy teen spirit look. I tried to represent both sides of myself,” Ashley Smith says of her first design collaboration. Teaming up with California-based company RVCA, Smith, who also models, is designing six capsule collections, the first of which debuted last week. Growing up as a tomboy in Texas and now being a model in New York, you could say Smith’s fashion taste is nothing like what it used to be. Her past included various punk inspirations, piercings, and multi-colored hair, but her current style often includes high-waisted skirts and cropped sweaters. Balancing the two opposites, the Ashley Smith x RVCA collection is filled with sheer pastel blouses, plenty of high-waisted skirts and cropped sweaters, as well as a black leather moto jacket, pair of shorts and backpack. It’s like a ’90s high schooler rejects the dress code, good girl gone bad.
The lookbook reflects this mischievous school-girl mentality and although it was shot in the model’s own New York apartment, if she could have shot it anywhere it would have been during a Beach Boys concert on a San Francisco beach. But since the Beach Boys heyday is long gone, Smith simply says, “It’s 2014. Let’s have fun, be young and dance our asses off!”
