Just last week, France announced it would be banning full body swim suits in response the recent terrorist attack in Nice that left 84 dead. Now images have emerged of French police ordering a Muslim woman to remove her scarf, right before escorting her off the beach and fining her.
This, however, is not the only case of profiling of Muslim women on beaches in France. Video has also surfaced of police patrolling beaches in Nice and asking women wearing burkinis to remove them in public. A victim of this harassment, named Siam, spoke to Daily Mail after being asked to strip down from her leggings and scarf for dressing “inappropriately.”
“My children were crying as they witnessed by humiliation,” she said. “Today we are not allowed on the beach. Tomorrow, the street? Tomorrow, we’ll be forbidden from practicing our religion at all?I’m in the country of human rights. I see no trace of the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. I am outraged that this could happen in France.”
In response, Muslim women everywhere have continued to wear burkinis and even boosted sales by 200%, as a way to show the freedom that the garment represents.
